South Sound offers the best of Grand Cayman living

The mermaid of South Sound

The mermaid of South Sound

The oceans are full of myth and mystery. Here in South Sound, legend meets reality beneath the waves. For years, divers and snorkelers have emerged from the South Sound reef at Sunset House with stories.

They speak of a figure standing still on the sea floor. She is known to be graceful and quiet and always surrounded by marine life. Some believe she’s watching. Others say she’s simply waiting.

Her name is Amphitrite, and she is South Sound’s very own mermaid. Resting 50 feet below the surface, Amphitrite is a nine-foot-tall bronze sculpture that has become one of Grand Cayman’s most beloved underwater landmarks.

Most divers explore Grand Cayman’s reefs by day to soak in the sunlit coral gardens and clear waters. After dark, a hidden world awakens. The reefs come alive with nocturnal wonders, eerie calm, and bioluminescent glow.
