Local flavors: Caribbean comfort food just steps from South Sound

If you know, you know. And if you don’t, it’s time you did. Although we’re a little reluctant to let the secret out. Just a short walk from South Sound, nestled on Walker’s Road, are two humble culinary landmarks that South Sounders swear by: Mr. P’s and Top Taste. These small, unassuming Carribean eateries are easy to miss from the road, but their flavors are anything but forgettable.

Mr. P’s, open since 2018, prides itself on using the freshest local ingredients, sourcing produce and seafood directly from Caymanian farmers and fishers. Alongside Top Taste, their menus are a celebration of bold Caribbean cooking. You’ll find ackee and saltfish, fish rundown, jerk chicken and pork, oxtail, curry goat, liver and onions, and conch stew. If it’s comfort food with serious flavor you’re after, step inside. You’ll find the real deal with tender oxtail stew simmered to perfection, fiery jerk chicken straight off the grill, and curried goat rich with spice and tradition. These dishes aren’t just meals, they’re stories passed down through generations and served with sides like plantains, rice and beans, callaloo, or stewed cabbage.

It doesn’t stop at the main course. Both spots are also known for their vibrant natural juices such as cucumber, carrot, passion fruit, tamarind, and guava, often infused with ginger for an added kick. You’ll also find a rich peanut punch and fresh coconut water made daily. And, no proper Caribbean kitchen would be complete without scotch bonnet peppers, which adds unmistakable heat and depth to many dishes.

These restaurants are extremely popular, so the atmosphere is lively and fast-paced during peak hours. It’s ideal for those on the go, though each offers a few indoor tables if you want to sit and savor your meal. Calling ahead makes it easy to grab and run.

Mr. P’s and Top Taste serve up some of the most authentic Caribbean cuisine you’ll find anywhere in Grand Cayman. Offering no frills or fancy signage, it’s just real flavor at the edge of the South Sound neighborhood. These spots deliver the kind of Caribbean comfort that keeps people coming back.
